GUEST LECTURES

A standalone or series of lectures that we host in collaboration with a university master program to look into applied research.

We will discuss how anthropological thinking can be useful in business contexts, considering the conceptual framework used in applied research. We will also introduce anthropology’s version of scalability, and look at the concept of systems in transition. As a final activity, we will take the group through exercises on positionality.

The content is based on our own work experience at Namla and prior to it, including the pitfalls and success stories. We typically build the lectures in the format of a presentation followed by an exercise, which is executed in groups. They can be hosted live or online, and can last 90-180 minutes.

BOOTCAMPS FOR MASTER STUDENTS

The bootcamps are designed to simulate an industry-working environment for anthropology master students and recent-graduates, giving participants the opportunity to combine nuanced thinking with iterative work practices.

The main goal of the program is to help applied ethnographers find out which practices and methods work better for them in the different situations they are likely going to face in their career. As a result, the young professionals build up more confidence to navigate distinct work environments.

In the program, participants will dive into: how to translate research into action; how to manage pressure-cooker settings; how to prototype solutions with design thinking; why selling your ideas is important and what are ways in doing so.

The course will have a minimum of 4 days to a maximum of 6 weeks, according to the needs of the university and/or collaborating institutions.

COURSE: DESIGN THINKING FOR RESEARCHERS

Short and intensive courses for qualitative researchers in an academic career track who want to increase their societal impact next to or after their academic positions. This program is specially designed for PhD candidates and qualitative researchers.

The main goal of the course is to give researchers a new set of skills based on the Design Thinking approach. A method that allows you to quickly test assumptions and build on new findings.

The course will have a minimum of 4 days to a maximum of 6 weeks, according to the needs of the university and/or collaborating institutions.

BOOTCAMPS

A learning experience where working teams, alongside social scientists, try out anthropological methods and (new) ways of thinking and engaging with their consumers, users, clients or citizens. When we connect social scientists to organisations (commercial, governmental or NGOs), all actors tend to expand and deepen the lens through which they look at the world and its problems.

During the fast-ethnography bootcamp, participants will learn about core ethnographic methods and get inspired. We will look into anthropological ways of inquiry, analysis of research results, and new insights on the participants’ field of work/study.

We will divide the participants in teams, and each will be paired with an experienced applied anthropologist and a facilitator to support them in their working process. We will combine exposure to anthropological concepts and methods of applied research and development.

The bootcamps can be delivered on site or in hybrid format, and they will consist of 6 days which can be spread across 3-4 weeks.

MASTERCLASS 1: INTRO TO ANTHROPOLOGICAL THINKING

Would you like to get a glimpse of how anthropologists think? This session is designed to show people working outside academia (business, NGOs, government, and social workers) what are the bases of anthropology.

We will present to your team a group of anthropological concepts and how they are interrelated, and propose exercises to make it easier to grasp. Some of the concepts we will discuss are cognitive empathy, structure and agency, belonging, hierarchy and power, liminality; and moreover, their relevance for building a future-proof business in any industry.

MASTERCLASS 2: STORYTELLING FROM ANTHROPOLOGICAL LENS

Would you like to learn how to craft narratives that are about real people, not personas? In this masterclass, we will approach storytelling through an anthropological lens, balancing personal narratives with more generic abstractions.

In a short amount of time (2-3h), your team or organisation will learn how to tell a story like an anthropologist, how to inspire and connect and how to humanise the subject matter.
